I am 20 and I have a good full time job and I would like to keep it given the status of the economy. I would also like to get a few college credits online. I Can’t work full time and go to school. Have you taken any online college classes? how did you like them? would you recommend them?

You should check out the local colleges to see if they offer online degrees. I got my master’s degree entirely online from Indiana University. A friend of mine got her degree through Walden University online.

my daughter is a high school sophmore and a very advanced students, and is interested in being an international trade specialist. A friend suggested that she take an online course in business management. Is she old enough, and about how much does it cost?

Online college degree programs are expensive and not all of them are accredited. Your daughter can attend summer school and graduate one semester early, so that she can attend college in January instead of waiting till Fall.

There are also some advanced honors courses available in high school that are accepted as college credit. Her high school counselor will have more info on that.

I recommend community colleges for the first two years of college, as it is offers more individual attention and is less expensive that a four year university, and the credits offered are the same so they will transfer. An academic advisor can assist you with this.

is there anyone out there that actually has received a online degree and could tell me how that whole thing goes? was it easier than going on campus?

70% of all 2-year and 4-year colleges in the US now teach online. Online/Distance education is not a new concept anymore – it’s normal.

Some of the finest colleges in the world are teaching online: Oxford, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, and 1000’s more. It’s just not new and mysterious any longer.

Some really bad colleges teach online too; and everything in between. Whether it’s worth the time and effort depends entirely on what school we’re talking about and not whether it’s online or classroom.

Is it easier? Nope – not usually. It’s actually often much harder and most people aren’t able to complete their whole degree this way – most people need to be in the classroom for some of their classes or they just won’t get it. But, some people can do it this way just fine.

It requires that you have a commitment and motivation. While the classroom folks know they have to be in class on Tuesday and Thursday at 2PM, the online folks don’t have to be in class at a certain time but they still have to get the work done. Nobody will remind you every other day to read the book or that your paper is due in x-days. You have to motivate yourself. If you have questions then you have to get them answered electronically – usually email.

The only true advantage to an online course is the flexibility of time and location. You can watch the lecture video at 3AM from anywhere in the world. Otherwise, the history of Rome is the same whether you learn it in a classroom full of other napping students that haven’t read the book, gazing off into space as Joe the teaching assistant rambles endlessly on… or at home after having read the chapters and/or watched the lecture video so that you can intelligently discuss them with your classmates in the discussion forum.

Remember though, it’s all about the quality of the school. An online course from Harvard, Berkeley, or Oxford isn’t the same as one from Penn-Foster, UoP, or AIU (just some examples).

Does an online college degree hold as much weight in the real world, as one obtained from a community college?

I’m almost 30 and have some credits at a community college. Well life sorta got in the way lol. I sorta like to be around people, but I’m finding a lot of social interaction with the internet; so I was thinking of taking classes that way. I know sometimes online schools aren’t acredited and maybe a human resources person generalizes them all that way. What do you think?

lol YUP! life gets in the way of getting the degree alright, but if you waited until life didn’t get in the way, you would be waiting a very long time! so I encourage you to go ahead with it!

About the online schools…. there are both pros and cons to classes that are online. I took online courses for my BA and failed (twice if I remember correctly)… you have to be a SUPER self-starter and have 0% procrastination (or at least be able to handle the ‘procras’ part)..

And you are right about the accreditation! make sure that the school you would be attending online is a school that is accredited by both the association that you are tailoring your degree to (such as social workers getting their master’s would want the school to be accredited by CACREP). The university would also need to be accredited through a national accreditation check this link out for more information:

Graduation rate is 6 to 9 % per year. That means 91 to 94 students in every 100 do not get to graduation. Are they disenrolled? Why do they drop out?

is anybody familiar with universities in illinois which offer online Graduate degrees?

I am a resident of illinois who is looking to get my MBA degree. I would like to attend an university in illinois which offers online MBA programs. I knjow there are non-campus universities that offer these, but does anybody have any knowledge or experience with universities in illinois for an online mba? Thank you

The Illinois Virtual Campus (http://www.ivc.illinois.edu/ ) lists 297 online degrees including 71 master’s available in Illinois. Among those; Argosy, Benedictine, and St. Francis offer an MBA and DePaul offers an MS in eCommerce.

U Illinois Online http://www.online.uillinois.edu/catalog/Programs.asp lists 82 programs but none are an MBA. There is an MPA, MPH, and MHA online (Public Administration, Public Health, and Health Administration) as well as oodles of education and computer masters and even master’s in engineering.

Your state schools are offering a lot of health and computer related master’s degrees online. That could be an employment shortage clue. Check out that list of degrees and certs – if I lived in your state I’d take advantage of one of those opportunities.

Will my credits transfer from Devry University to Florida Atlantic University and which courses does FAU take?

hi all,

I always want to go to florida Atlantic University but I had like many people a few bumps in the road and decide two years ago that Devry university will be best fit for me which i was completely wrong and now to transfer to Fau i have been studying for the CLEP, taking class at local community colleges, and taking classes at Devry University so i will have 60 credits to be consider as a junior when i enter the university in january when they appected me someone please help me and give me some advice because I really need to leave Devry university it is nothing like I though it would be and i am ready to leave for sure in January to become a Owl.

PS if any body know what exact credits transfer from Devry to FAU that will be a big help thanks in advance.

DeVry is regionally accredited (north central) so FAU should take applicable credit from DeVry.

Keep in mind though that transfer of credit is not an automatic right – FAU gets to decide what they will and will not transfer and it varies from student to student by program.

If you took a bunch of very technical courses at DeVry then FAU may not take as much as if they were academic classes.

The only way to know for sure without asking FAU.
