What’s your opinion on obtaining your college degree online?

Have you done it? What degree did you pursue? What college do you recommend?

Seeing that everyone has been a little negative towards earning an education online, I want to add a bit of positive sight for distance learning. I am currently halfway done with a Masters degree in Counseling from Capella University. It’s actually been a great experience to be able to learn and go to "school" at home, work, library, etc. I can tell you now that I have a four year bach. degree from a public accredited university and I have never experienced teachers that cared and was personable until I attended Capella Univ. I am in my fourth quarter there and my hubby is starting there as a IT major next quarter so he is excited. Alot of people I know personally, co-workers, and colleagues, have gotten degrees from Argosy and Univ. of Phoenix and have gotten great jobs ranging in corporate, to teaching. I have two friends now at Capella and we love it, so that’s my experience and going to a brick and mortar university may not be right for you and distance learning is certainly not for everyone.

It takes great discipline and motivation, you have to stay on top of things. I recommend Capella simply because it has great teachers, administration is good at solving problems, and their reputation is really good. If you have questions, I’m at msjaybutler@yahoo.com….

Capella University Textbooks?

Are textbooks included with tuition for Capella University?

No. Capella uses text books written by other professionals and experts. Some schools include text books in their tuition but then have extra fee’s on top of them. Capella has no extra fee’s. I have been a Masters student there for 18 months.

Would I be better off not getting a degree at all rather than getting a degree from Capella University?

If you ask 100 general people what they think of Capella University, about 98 will answer with "who?", one will have a favorable impression, and one will have an unfavorable impression. (not a scientifically based comment, but you get the idea)

Those "in the know" are fully aware of who and what Capella University is and asking the question here implies that you question the value and/or utility of that degree. If that is the case then you should explore another option.

There are plenty of options out there and in the final analysis, you have to be happy with your choice. It matters very little in your life what I think of Capella; it may matter what prospective employers think.

No matter where you ask though – there will always be some people that think that College X is the only "real" college in the world or that any college below Tier Y isn’t worth the effort.

You should attend the very best college that you can. If that’s Capella then the degree you get from there will be more than the degree you don’t get from anywhere.

Does anyone have any knowledge about Capella University?

Is a PhD from this institution prestigous or worthy? Attending colloquia is a requirement, as well as the dissertation.

Here is the website for this on line university: http://www.capella.edu/

Here is what Wikipedia says about the University, but remember, the public is allowed to change or write in their opinions. The University may have sent in this description:

What is the name of Capella University’s favorite Director of Training?

Absolutely it was Dr. Nanette Reese Rivers. She was a cute blonde with a contagious laugh. She brightened everyone’s day that she worked with. The love of her life was her son, Michael. We don’t know why you had to leave us, Nan, but we miss you terribly. Capella has never been the same since you left. Please keep the students of Capella in your thoughts and prayers, going through terrible times right now. Lots of harrassment, discrimination and disenrollment going on that Dr. Nan would never have allowed on her watch!

Is Capella a good Online University?

I am planning to do my masters in Counselling Psychology online and some one recomended Capella, is this University Accredited in The US?

CuriousOne suggested something great. I am attending Capella; however, you may be located near a traditional university that offers hybrid courses. I am not (or at least in my PhD discipline), but for masters there are simply more options.

Also, see the link below to check out if schools are accredited (Capella is). This will take you directly to the accrediting source and not just going by what the university says. Good luck!

Does Capella University hire instructors with fake degrees?

Is it true that for-profit Capella University has hired people with fake degrees?

I’ve read that they have an instructor who bought fake degrees who is still there. One of those web sites is –

http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?threadid=3571&highlight=stottlemyer

Capella University does hire people with fake degrees. The person mentioned in the link has been there for many years and is still there. She is still listed in their current catalog.

Who cares if the government hires people with fake degrees? That doesn’t make it right. Capella University has hired someone with fake degrees a long time ago and that person is still there. A real school would never hire someone like that. Others have fired people who have bought fake degrees from the same diploma mill.

There is no excuse for anyone to hire frauds that use fake degrees. When a university hires someone and then doesn’t do anything about it then that is an even bigger fraud. The fact that the person is still teaching at Capella University after all these years is very disturbing. The United States Government even did a study on the diploma mill that the person from Capella bought her fraudulent degrees from. The school’s name is Lacrosse University and the report was given to Congress more than four years ago. Capella University is committing fraud by letting people with fake degrees teach there.

Does Capella University have a provost?

When I looked at Capella University’s web site, I can’t find anyone listed as their provost. Normally the provost is the chief academic officer at a school. Does Capella currently have provost? If so, who?

This seems to be very strange. Capella University used to have a provost; her name is Karen Viechnicki. Maybe she was fired or let go? Wish I could give a better answer but it is odd that Capella no longer seems to have a provost.

Is Capella University well respected by employers and a good school to pursue an MBA?

Please do steer clear of those online, for-profit schools such as capella, u of phoenix, ITT tech, kaplan, penn foster, walden, strayer, devry, keiser, ashworth and others as they are merely out to ‘make a profit’ (and course credits may not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search.

Most, if not all, colleges offer online courses so please consider a major college or uni when furthering one’s education.

http://www.capellauniversity.org/images/Capella_UCI_Signed_Kickback_Agreement_November_2004.pdf
